What to know about waterproof flooring

No matter where you live, waterproof flooring will change your life because it’s stylish and functional, giving you the ultimate peace of mind. You’ll always know your floor is protected from water damage no matter how much, or for how long, it is submerged. It’s all about those technologically advanced cores, the WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite).

Waterproof vs. water-resistant flooring

Waterproof means entirely impervious to liquid; no water can ever penetrate to soak the core. These floors are made from 100% waterproof materials. These floors are waterproof from both the top and bottom, meaning they can take spills or be submerged in water, and they’ll always look good as new. While something can be highly water-resistant, there’s still a possibility that some water will seep through.

Aesthetic & functional flooring

Waterproof vinyl flooring is engineered luxury vinyl (LVF) with the same style, but with a WPC or SPC core that never peels or ripples. While LVF is also waterproof, these cores add a higher level of protection. The only difference between SPC and WPC is the feeling underfoot. While SPC is more rigid and firm, WPC is more flexible, resilient, and cushion-like.

Images are taken with 3D photography, with unique features such as micro beveling and embossing to give the floor depth and dimension. Since the material follows industry trends, you can get wood, marble, other stone looks, fun, colorful tile graphics, and textures such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, or antiqued. The material can be cut into long planks, called vinyl plank flooring or square, groutable tile-sized pieces, LVT flooring.

It is easy to care for, with only a daily sweeping and a weekly mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Avoid wax shine promoting cleaners as they can damage the finish and dull the floor. If you think you need more shine, seek the advice of an expert.

Installation can be a floating floor that is click, mat, and hover. Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level. While the floating floor technique is fast and straightforward, installers will sometimes need to sand the subfloor since imperfections can show on the surface.
