What are wood-look alternatives to hardwood flooring?

Both luxury vinyl (LVF) and laminate flooring offer products with all the beauty of hardwood flooring without the price tag or water concerns. Thanks to high-resolution photography, micro beveling, and deep embossing, they are so realistic that even experts sometimes have trouble discerning them from genuine wood. Following industry trends, these floors come in a wide assortment of styles and designs.

Wood floor trends

In and of themselves, wood floors are a trend that’s expected to last at least 15 years. Whether you want cool tones, such as gray and gray blends for a farmhouse style, light, whitewashed or natural tones for an airy, contemporary atmosphere, or dark shades for a dramatic look, there are no limits as to what you can achieve. Both LVF and laminate can be cut into long planks and, with LVF, that’s specifically called vinyl plank flooring. If you prefer more seams, these floors can also be cut into square, tile-sized pieces, which can work for either wood, stone, or tile.

What’s the difference between vinyl and wood-look laminate?

Any version of vinyl is also referred to as resilient because even though it’s technically a hard surface, it has a bouncy, cushion-like quality. Laminate has a more rigid, firm feeling underfoot. Ultimately, the choice will come down to your personal preference.

It also depends upon the room in which it’s to be installed, however. LVF is entirely impervious to liquid, made of waterproof materials, and it can be spilled on or submerged. While highly water-resistant, laminate does have a chance of water seeping in; however, a more waterproof version includes special coatings and backings to eliminate water absorption.
